can't get the damned drums back over the new shoes because I'm as dumb as disc brakes apparently

how I feel about my car at the moment

Kinja'd!!!

aaaand cut ahead a couple of hours.

Kids are sound asleep, and car is functional.

The issue was springs were mounted in the wrong hole and thus not holding the tension after compressing the piston. Follow my sage advice, always do one side at a time so you have a reference.

However... return of the leaking steering rack... :(

You need to press the wheel cylinder and turn the adjusters in.

Yeah make sure the little star adjuster is backed down to it's lowest point, was what thwarted me my first time.

yeah, tried both. I've given up, for the moment, and taking some time to vent on the internet, feed kids and put them to bed so I can swear loudly in peace

What he said... Don't feel bad, the damn adjusters are the bane of most drum brake rookies...

Some people are all like "Oh yeah, drums are super easy. I work on them all the time on semis." But those are air brakes, which are literally just shoes and a cam, and therefore nothing at all like the mass of springs and cables and twisting locks that are adjustable hydraulic drum brakes.

A wave of fear and panic runs through me every time I see exposed brake shoes and those *gulp* springs.

I will always pay someone to wrestle with my drum brakes. I plan to do nothing to my rat rods drums until I upgrade to discs.

Don't feel to bad, I once had a disk brake job take 8 hours... Granted it involved replacing two rotors, 4 studs and an unplanned rear axle disassembly (it was the "easy" way to disassemble the rear hub on a Ford floating rear truck axle).

ok, I'll give you taht, the springs were in the end my downfall, but its not like opening a tightly wound clock and everything jumps out :P

The taking out part is easy, it's trying to put everything back in that's the pain in the ass.

I have done it. That's how I came to the decision to always pay someone. You can't convince me otherwise!

Looking at all those springs makes me want to stab someone. Jail time is expensive.
